Kaishu – Japanese restaurant in Maastricht

We planned to have some Indian food for dinner only to find they close every Dinsdag – Tuesday. I been craving for briyani and papadum for days, this is something I don’t think I can make myself at home (?) but who knows what a hungry person can do in the kitchen.

There is only one Indian restaurant here and I really hope that they serve some tasty Indian food.

So, change of plan and I insisted to go Japanese restaurant since I don’t have much faith in the Thai cuisine in Maastricht. Men who marry/date a Malaysian woman learn very quickly that we get very grumpy when hungry, we discuss the plan of dinner at lunch… food is very important and never get in between us and our food. Needless to say, I won the battle between Japanese and Thai easily.

It’s quite easy to decide which Japanese restaurant we were going to. Kaishu is affordable, they do not use Kikoman soy sauce, and they make california handroll just the way I like it, it tasted almost like the one in Sushi Tei.

I had discovered Kaishu 2 weeks ago by accident and went for the buffet lunch on the same day. It was okay, mainly okay because of the california handroll. Nothing spectacular about the fried rice, miso soup was not tasty for Euro16.50 I had choices of about 10 different sushis, few makis, 4 handrolls… I was quickly filling up by the rice. If I wanted sashimi, I had to pay separately so I stick to sushi sake.

Few days later, I returned to the restaurant trying the cooked food by paying Euro25 instead of Euro16.50. Did not like the fact that they used the same oil for all frying, I could smell the ebi tempura in the fish and the fish in the squid. Maybe they were being Chinese, recycling the oil to save cost. No, there is no Japanese chef or waitress, all Chinese troop.

So last night, all I wanted was some california handroll dipped in the heavily wasabi-ed soy sauce. To our surprise, the duck (in the paying menu) was delicious and very cheap*. For Euro4.00 you get a nicely roasted duck breast with some salad at the side. The duck breast would cost Euro3.00 to buy from supermarket, uncooked. And for the same price, we get 9 pieces of salmon sashimi!

*After returning several times to try the duck, it’s proven that the consistency is not there and the duck dish is not always good.

So we learned, to eat at Kaishu, stick to the Euro16.50 buffet for couple of california rolls + sushi, forget about the cooked food menu, order two salmon sashimi and two duck breasts on the side, we are happy.

We also had quite a nice bottle of French Pinot Gris at Euro30 which Willem thinks the restaurant only make Euro10 out of the bottle.

So the summaries are

  • Atmosphere/deco – Dated, think eating in the 80s. But I rather have good food than good atmosphere.
  • Food quality – mixed. Would avoid the fried and cooked food except the duck. The ebi tempura was okay but they did not have the right dip for it. The fried/cooked food would get 4-5 points out of 10 while the sushi/sashimi gets above 6, duck 7.5 points.
  • Price value – fairly good for eating Japanese food in Maastricht.
2 thumbs up for not using Kikoman soy sauce.

    Many Asian restaurants seem to have the same wine supplier – I recognize their selection.

    Good thing is this means they have the Elzas wines from Trimbach, one of the most dedicated winemakers in that French region. He makes his wines dry (some Elzas winemakers leave a bit too much residual sugar), and that is good for the choices of the menu we tend to make. Still, the wines have the typical richness of Elzas wines, enough power next to the soy sauce, enough acidity for freshness and taste structure (for example to match the fat of salmon sashimi), and the nice but not overpowering candied white fruit aroma’s (from our 2007 Pinot Gris reserve) that go well with the flavours of this cuisine.
    This wine stands well next too raw fatty salmon, as to the grilled duck – very versatile. Nice.
